Attending the Epidaurus Festival 2011

Attending the Athens and Epidaurus Festival – Visitor Information

Since 1998 people have flocked to Athens, Greece to witness one of the most spectacular cultural events in Europe in the birth place of theater.  Feature music, art, theater and various performances, the Epidaurus festival is a tribute to the Hellenistic period in Grecian history and the cultural achievements still celebrated today.  Hotels in Athens book quickly at this time so if you are looking for cheap hotels in Athens or tours of Athens, make sure to make your reservation as soon as possible.  Or you can contact us for hotel reccomendations in Athens.

The theater of Epidaurus references to one of the two original sites of the Hellenistic festival.  Originally, performances were only held at the two ancient theaters, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the theaters of Epidaurus in the ancient city of Asklepios.  In 2005, the Greece Ministry of Culture expanded the festival, building new venues and diversifying the festival programme in order to attract a more diverse crowd and appeal to young people and new artists.  Because venues are spread through the city, don't leave your hotel without a map of Athens!

The 2011 Epidaurus festival programme includes a diverse array of visual art, theater, music, dance and other events.  Theater performances range from the tragedies of Euripides and other ancient plays or modern renderings of the rituals of Dionysus.  Visual arts follow contemporary travelers in Grecian society, paying homage to literature’s greatest voyager, Odysseus.   The weather in Athens is usually pleasant in the summer, allowing for most performances to be outdoors.

Tickets to the Epidaurus festival can be booked online, by telephone or in person with festival organizers or through the festival website.
