It is the only month of the year when the city is empty. September, milder than August, is usually pleasant because of occasional light rainfall, and it's the best month for enjoying the sea with the warmest water temperatures. October has more rains which makes the region beautiful at this time.

Athens has maximum rainfall from November to February which makes it cold and windy. The temperature average is 5-10 degrees celcius. However, the city has plenty of sunny days in winter and the occasional heavy shower is usually followed by bright sunshine.

The best time to visit Athens is during late autumn and spring. Summers can be dry and extremely hot, with occasional heat waves making the place unbearably hot. Winter is a low season for tourism due to occasional rain and snow. However, Athens in winter is enjoyable, with added benefits like off-season low costs and absence of crowds. Azure blue skies on sunny days turn smoggy during peak hours in areas with heavy traffic. Athens is surrounded by mountains creating a basin that confines the smog, making the pollution seem worse than it actually is.
